Follows the adventures of Clary Fray, a girl who discovers she is a shadowhunter. She must seek out others like her and descend into an alternate New York called the Downworld (from IMDb).
I know that Shadowhunters won't be airing for another couple of months, but I'm very excited to see it. Since I began to read the Mortal Instruments series all the way back in 2008, I have been a great fan of the Shadowhunter world. Therefore words do not convey the true excitement I feel every time I read an article about this TV series or watch an interview clip, because so far it seems like the adaptation the books deserved in the first place.
I do remember being this excited for the Mortal Instruments movie, but I did have my concerns with the cast. For one; Jamie Campbell Bower was not the right choice for Jace. Neither was Kevin Zegers as Alec. Don't even get me started on Jonathon Rhys Meyers or Aiden Turner, who were both too young and not charismatic enough in their respective roles of Valentine Morganstern and Luke Garroway. Overall I did quite enjoy the movie, but it didn't capture the essence of the books, and perhaps that was just because the medium of a movie wasn't right for the story. Perhaps a TV show was the way to go to begin with. There is just so much lore and history to the Shadowhunter world that the movie just didn't have time to go into.
The casting for the TV show appears to be excellent. Katherine McNamara and Dominic Sherwood will play Clary Fray and Jace Wayland, our two main leads. There are the most annoying characters in the books in my opinion, but I do want to like them and from what I've seen they seem like they will do the characters a real justice in making them relatable.
In the movie, Jace just seemed so whiny; whilst in the book he's just a bit of an idiot. I want to see a more playful and lighthearted side to Jace in the TV series, one who can take a joke. Same goes for Clary. I know her entire world is going up in flames when she becomes involved with the shadowhunters, but she really needs to stop being so angsty and make the best of a bad situation, like the rest of them do.
I have never seen anything McNamara has starred in, but have heard pretty decent things. I saw Sherwood in the movie adaptation of Vampire Academy, a shoddy adaptation. However, that was because the writers wanted it to be 'mean girls with vampires' which wasn't how the book was at all, so that was nothing to do with him. In fact, I thought he was very good and sweet as Christian.
Matthew Daddario looks terrific as Alec Lightwood, one half of my favourite pairing in the entire Shadowhunter universe. He seems charming and funny, but a sarcastic grump when he wants to be, just like Alec. Isabelle Lightwood will be played by Emeraude Toubia, someone completely unknown to me, but I have high hopes for her. Isabelle was always a character I felt drawn towards and admired. Sure she's got her softer side, especially when it comes to her brother and Jace. But she's also fierce and funny, with killer dress sense and fights demons with a whip. I mean, come on; she's just awesome. And who doesn't need more awesome female demon hunters on TV?
Harry Shum Jr will be playing Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn, and the other half of my favourite pairing. I have enjoyed Shum Jr and his easy charisma since Glee, and now we get to see that charisma transferred to a character who is incredibly eccentric. From the stills released, he seems to embody Magnus and I'm so glad to see that. He and Daddario also appear to have a chemistry that will make their relationship shine. The show has rightfully realised Magnus is a character that should be present far more than the movie portrayed, as he's so interesting and fun. So yes, very excited to be seeing more of Magnus.
Simon Lewis is the last of the main cast, and I was excited to see Alberto Rosenbe in the role. I found Robert Sheehan right for the role as the nerdy best friend in the movie, but Rosenbe looks like he too could be quite pleasant to watch. Hopefully he will do us proud. Hopefully they all will.
Other cast members include Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, Alan van Sprang as Valentine, Maxim Roy as Jocelyn Fray amongst others. I'm glad the casting is more diverse than the movie, and that Camille will be featuring a little bit more. Like I said earlier, the addition of badass women is only going to improve a show in my eyes.
So yes, if you don't know anything about the show, I suggest you start doing your research. Or, if you're normal, just watch some clips and see what you think. Here is the link to the first two clips of episode 1, combined into one (Shadowhunter clips 1-2) currently released from the first episode for you below. Best of luck watching and I hope you enjoy the show too when it starts on January 12th 2016.
